Assessment
At
Intensive Reading Interventions, everything begins with assessment. It
is vital to have the best understanding possible about your
child’s skill levels and what might be causing their struggle. Do they
have difficulty maintaining attention in certain environments? Do they
struggle with understanding what they hear or see? Is his or her
cognitive timing off?
Our initial evaluation will cover five main
areas:
-
Academics – A comprehensive academic assessment will determine how your
child is functioning in the areas of math, spelling, phonemic awareness,
nonsense words decoding, spelling, written language, oral language,
comprehension plus much more.
-
Attention (visual/auditory) – The Industry’s leading attention assessment will show how
well your child maintains focus in different environments, how
consistent they are in their response, how quickly they can respond to
stimuli as well as several
other areas.
-
Auditory Processing (how the brain
interprets sounds) – Your child’s ears may be functioning normally but
unless their brain can interpret the signals coming in from their ears, they
may have trouble making sense of what they hear. This assessment
helps us understand how your child deals with sound in different
environments such as a teacher speaking with his or her back to your
child in a noisy classroom.
-
Visual Perception (how the brain interprets
what it sees) – Like auditory processing, difficulty in processing
visual information can lead to frustration and often goes undiagnosed.
This screening aids our understanding of how your child functions in
several different areas of visual processing.
-
Cognitive Timing – Problems with the “brain
clock” have been linked to neurological difficulties as varied as
ADD/ADHD, dyslexia, and Parkinson’s. Life for a child with timing
difficulties can be like watching a movie where the soundtrack is off by
half of a second. It is frustrating and requires much more effort
to understand what is trying to be communicated. Our Interactive
Metronome® baseline assessment will
show how your child operates in comparison with others their own age.
